Playboi Carti followed a month of controversy, including an arrest, with his first release since his 2018, “@ MEH”, his first single nearly 2 years after his last drop. Like a lot of his peers, Carti has been the subject to numerous online leaks, causing him to push back the release of any music, so this single is a big deal. The song is a colorful, fast-paced response to his haters, which can be heard immediately on the hook when he says “pussy ass ni**a just talk shit / them pussy ni**as ain’t bout that shit.”
The track is produced by jetsonmade, Neeko Baby, and Deskhop, resulting in a sound unlike anything Carti has previously put out. Carti has typically stayed in a close circle, working only with producer Pierre Bourne and a few others on his first two albums. It sounds like experimenting sonically is paying off. In his signature “baby voice” style, Carti floats over the beat, hard to understand as always, which is part of the lure that has amassed him a die-hard fanbase. Hopefully, this is a sign that we’re close to getting Whole Lotta Red, his highly anticipated next album.
