Lyric of the Week: Anderson .Paak – King James

Lyric of the Week - Regular (3)

Lyric: What we built here is godly, you can’t gentrify the heart of kings

Song: Anderson .Paak – “King James”

Album: Ventura (2019)

Background: The lead single off of Anderson .Paak’s 2019 album Ventura, “King James” is a smooth, funk filled track that pays homage to NBA superstar LeBron James, and touches on problematic social justice issues in the United States. Paak’s fourth studio album saw a nice return to form, receiving widespread critical acclaim. The sweet spot between throwback funk and soul is met with modern day hip-hop, and draws similarities to classic Motown grooves on tracks like “Make It Better” featuring Smokey Robinson. Ventura was Anderson .Paak’s first Top 10 album in the US, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
